For children and young people, smartphones are an integral part of everyday life. This creates a clear challenge for schools: How can digital skills be promoted without mobile phones constantly distracting in class? Therefore, more and more schools are dealing with phone-free zones, clear smartphone rules, and practical storage solutions like lockable smartphone cabinets. In a nutshell Around 95 percent of young people use their smartphone daily, yet over half themselves advocate for a mobile phone ban in schools. A lockable smartphone cabinet practically resolves the conflict: devices are out of sight but remain available when needed. Current figures on mobile phone use in schools According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education, around 95 percent of young people use their smartphones daily. At the same time, 57 percent of young people support a mobile phone ban in primary schools. For secondary schools, approval is even higher at 58 percent. The JIM Study 2025 also shows how present smartphones are in young people's daily lives: the average smartphone screen time is almost four hours a day. Sources: Federal Agency for Civic Education, JIM Study 2025 Why smartphones are such a big distraction in class A smartphone doesn't have to be actively used to disrupt concentration. Even its visible presence on the desk can cause students to mentally dwell on messages, social media, or potential notifications. The German School Portal summarizes current studies on mobile phone bans in schools and refers, among other things, to the results of the PISA study. These show that digital distraction in class can be a relevant problem for learning processes. Source: Deutsches Schulportal Loss of concentration: Messages, apps, and social media compete with lessons. Disruptions to lessons: Even brief glances at a mobile phone pull students out of the learning flow. Social pressure: Many young people feel obliged to respond quickly. Lack of breaks: Conversations and relaxation are replaced by screen time. Exam security: Smartphones can be used as unauthorized aids in exams. Practical thought: A phone-free school does not automatically mean a blanket phone ban. Often, a clear storage solution is sufficient so that smartphones are out of sight but still available if needed. Mobile phone ban or mobile-free zone? Many schools are not looking for a strict ban but rather a practical solution for everyday life. Smartphones should be securely stored during lessons, class tests, or exams. At the same time, they should be able to be returned quickly if needed. Complete mobile phone ban Very clear rule Easy to communicate Often prone to discussion in everyday life Control can be time-consuming Phone-free zone with smartphone cabinet Secure storage Quick visual check Usage possible when needed Ideal for lessons and exams Why clear smartphone rules are becoming increasingly important in schools A Bitkom analysis shows that private smartphone use is already heavily regulated in many schools. In schools with rules, smartphones are often only allowed for private use in certain areas such as the schoolyard or designated smartphone zones. This shows that schools need solutions that make rules visible and practically implementable. A lockable smartphone cabinet supports precisely this. Source: Bitkom Practical solution: Lockable smartphone cabinets for schools A lockable smartphone cabinet offers schools a simple way to store mobile phones securely during lessons, exams, or in specific school areas. Each smartphone gets a fixed place. Devices are out of sight but remain stored in an organized and protected manner. Advantages of a smartphone cabinet Increased concentration: Less distraction in class. Clear rules: Students know exactly where their phone stays during class. Secure storage: Smartphones are not lying openly on tables or in bags. Better exam process: Unauthorized digital aids can be more easily avoided. Fewer discussions: The rule is visible, simple, and the same for everyone. For which areas is a smartphone cabinet suitable? Classrooms Exam rooms Staff rooms Seminar rooms Training rooms Media rooms Reception areas for sensitive discussions Phone-free school as an opportunity for more calm in daily school life Phone-free zones can help alleviate the stress of daily school life. Teachers have fewer discussions about individual mobile phones, students are interrupted less often, and exams can be organized more structured. This is not about fundamentally removing digital media from schools. The decisive factor is conscious use: if smartphones are needed for teaching, they can be used. If they are disruptive, they have a fixed place out of direct sight. Looking for a smartphone cabinet for your school?
