Organizing Packaging Materials More Sustainably: Cardboard Boxes, Filling Material, and Packing Tape In Short More sustainable packaging rarely starts with the material itself, but with more suitable box sizes and less filling material in everyday operations. This simultaneously reduces costs and waste, regardless of the material ultimately chosen. More sustainable packaging doesn't just mean buying different materials. Often, it begins with more suitable box sizes, less filling material, and clear standards in the shipping process. Practical Levers Define standard cartons based on typical shipments Avoid oversized cartons Use filling material specifically Check recyclable or paper-based alternatives Regularly monitor consumption and reordering Regulatory Guidance Companies should consider packaging not only by price but also by material, disposal, and legal frameworks. Guidance can be found, among others, from the Central Agency for Packaging Register and EU information on packaging. Frequently Asked Questions What saves the most on packaging material? Appropriate box sizes instead of uniform large cartons, which reduces both material costs and the amount of filling material needed. Are paper-based alternatives always sensible? For most standard shipments, yes, but for very fragile or heavy goods, additional protection may still be necessary. How is packaging related to the Central Agency for Packaging Register? Companies that place packaging on the market are often subject to registration, and it is always worthwhile to check one's own situation here. Packaging Guide Standardizing Packaging Materials in Companies: Cardboard Boxes, Packing Tape, and Void Fill Standardized packaging materials save time spent searching, prevent incorrect purchases, and ensure that shipping, warehousing, and mailrooms can work faster. In many companies, packaging materials accumulate without a plan: different box sizes, multiple types of packing tape, incorrect labels, or void fill that isn't suitable for shipping. With clear standards, shipping becomes simpler and more predictable.
