Manage consumable inventories across multiple locations

by Anna Ullmann on Jul 14, 2026

Insufficient stock levels lead to emergency orders, while excessive stock ties up space and capital. Therefore, simple, uniform rules are needed for multiple locations.

Which items should be monitored?

Primarily items whose absence disrupts operations: copy paper, toner, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, bin liners, coffee, and shipping materials.

ABC Classification

A-items are particularly important or expensive and are closely controlled. B-items are regularly checked. C-items are inexpensive and can be stored with a slightly larger reserve.

Simple Two-Bin System

When the first supply is used up, the second bin triggers the reorder. This principle works particularly well with steady consumption.

Location-Specific Quantities

A small location requires different stock levels than a head office or a facility with public traffic. The rules should be uniform, not necessarily the quantities.

Regular Control

Consumption and stock levels should be checked at regular intervals and adjusted in case of changes in personnel, space, or processes.

For demand planning: Determine consumption and order rhythm.
