Floor Lamps in the Office: Flexible Lighting for Workspaces In a Nutshell Floor lamps are particularly suitable for offices without fixed ceiling installations or with flexible workstation concepts because they can be positioned without reconstruction. Models with direct and indirect light appear more pleasant than purely direct spotlights. Floor lamps are a practical solution when workstations need to be illuminated flexibly or retrospectively. They do not require a fixed ceiling installation and can be positioned as needed depending on the room structure. When are floor lamps useful? for existing office spaces for rented premises without major renovations for individual and team workstations for flexible workstation concepts as a supplement to existing room lighting Direct and indirect radiating models Many office floor lamps combine direct light on the workstation with indirect light towards the ceiling. This can make the workstation appear brighter without illuminating the room unpleasantly harshly. Lighting for VDU workstations: Avoid glare and reflections In a nutshell Lights should be positioned to the side of the screen rather than directly in front of or behind it, as this avoids most reflections and glare. A combination of ambient light and individually adjustable task lighting is usually more effective than a single strong light source. Lighting is particularly important when working at a VDU. It should support the workstation without reflecting on the monitor, causing glare, or casting harsh shadows on the keyboard and work surface. Typical problems Reflections on the screen Direct glare from lights or windows Work surfaces that are too dark Harsh shadows when working with documents Poorly positioned desk lamps What helps? Lights should be positioned to illuminate the work area without shining directly into the eyes or onto the screen. A combination of ambient light and individually adjustable task lighting is often useful. Floor lamp or desk lamp? Floor lamps are well suited for flexible office spaces. Desk lamps help when a workstation specifically needs additional light. For both variants, it is important to check for glare and reflections. Frequently asked questions Where should the screen be positioned in relation to the window? Ideally to the side of the window, not directly in front or with your back to it, as this significantly reduces glare and reflections. Is ceiling lighting alone sufficient? Often not, especially when working with documents or in the evening, additional, individually adjustable task lighting helps. How do I recognise an unfavourable light position? Visible reflections on the screen or the feeling of being glared at are the clearest warning signs.
